August 26, 2024RCM Coding Challenges: AIABPM Recap
September 26, 2024The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) announced that CMS has accepted the RUC value recommendations for new Fascial Plane Block codes, which will be added to the existing Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block code family. These new codes, effective January 1, 2025, will allow pain medicine physicians to receive Medicare reimbursement for specific thoracic and lower extremity fascial plane block services.
The new CPT codes for thoracic (6XX07-6XX10) and lower extremity (6XX11-6XX12) fascial plane blocks will expand on the existing TAP block codes (64486-64489) and include both injection and continuous infusion procedures with imaging guidance. Adopting these codes follows ASA’s efforts, including member surveys and value recommendations submitted to the RUC in 2023, which highlighted the need for more specific reporting of these services.
CMS has proposed work RVUs that match the RUC’s recommendations, ensuring that these services are appropriately valued for Medicare reimbursement. Below are the proposed work RVUs for the new fascial plane block codes:
